Description
Financial Services Regulatory Lawyer - Corporate and Institutional Banking - GCB4 - LondonIf you're looking for a career where you can make a real impression, join HSBC and discover how valued you'll be.
HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.
HSBC's Legal function plays a critical role in supporting the bank's global operations, managing legal risk, and ensuring the efficient and effective use of external legal resources. We work closely with leading law firms and alternative legal service providers to secure the best commercial and strategic outcomes for the bank .
We are seeking a regulatory lawyer at an early stage of their career to join the Financial Services Regulation Legal team in Corporate and Institutional Banking ( CIB). You will provide legal advice, guidance, and support to ensure that regulatory legal and reputational risks faced by CIB are identified, reported, and mitigated.
You will work closely with and under the guidance of a senior and experienced financial regulatory lawyer, and in collaboration with a lawyer directly supporting Markets and Securities Services. This role will report to the head of Competition Law and Financial Regulation Legal, CIB.
In this role, you will:
- Partner with component businesses (excluding the MSS business) and their business/product lawyers in CIB to develop strategies to navigate a complex cross-border regulatory environment
- Support projects to deliver complex new financial services regulations originating from the United Kingdom (UK) or European Union (EU) or with a material impact on CIB's UK or EU business operations
- Contribute to strategic business change, by proactively identifying regulatory challenges (and helping to minimize them)
- Reduce regulatory risk by working with seniors in Legal, Regulatory Compliance and Public Affairs to optimize relationships with regulators, develop strategies for advocacy, and steward examinations
- Contribute to key advocacy, e.g., where the cross-border application of new financial services regulations would disparately impact HSBC's structure
To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:
- UK qualified lawyer with relevant experience at a comparable institution or in a well-regarded law firm's regulatory team. This is a role that an enthusiastic regulatory lawyer will be able to grow in, under the coaching and guidance of an experienced financial regulatory expert.
- A track record of advising on material UK and EU regulatory changes and their implementation (ideally including on sustainability- and banking-related developments), and on the UK and EU regulatory licensing perimeter.
- Excellent communication skills (with the ability to tailor the focus and complexity of written and oral advice to different audiences)
- Practical and pragmatic, with the ability to appropriately balance legal risks with commercial considerations.
- A self-starter who is able to work independently, prioritise effectively, and support complex matters with appropriate supervision and work well under pressure.
The base location for this role is London with a hybrid working pattern.
Being open to different points of view is important for our business and the communities we serve. At HSBC, we're dedicated to creating diverse and inclusive workplaces - no matter their gender, ethnicity, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or age. We are committed to removing barriers and ensuring careers at HSBC are inclusive and accessible for everyone to be at their best. We take pride in being a Disability Confident Leader and will offer an interview to people with disabilities, long term conditions or neurodivergent candidates who meet the minimum criteria for the role.
